501 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on the 6th August 1941 aged 20 years. The son of Nicholas and Hilda Maud Beacham of Radstock, High Street, Eston. Attended Coatham Grammar School from April 1930 aged 9 years old till July 1937. His Father owned a Grocery Shop. Pilot of Spitfire IIA, P7731 based at Ibsley, Hants , shot down into the sea off Cherbourg during a Cross Channel patrol. Remembered With Honour Runnymede Memorial. Surrey. Panel 39. also commemorated on family memorial in Eston Cemetery. Gravestone – N.23

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died at Kirton Lindsey, Lincolnshire on the 4th May 1944 , aged 20 years. The son of Joseph and Mary Ann Bird, 58 Lambton Street, Normanby. George Bowden, Stoker 2nd class, D/KX 165371, HMS Charybdis, born in South Bank, 17 March 1925 to James and Mary Jane Bowden, George was given permission by his parents to sign up at age 16, after training he was assigned to HMS Charybdis a light cruiser, on the night of 23 October 1943, Charybdis and other navy ships attacked a group of German cargo ships they had been watching the German navy had laid a trap for them behind the ships were fast moving torpedo boats, Charybdis was hit twice and sank in 20 minutes, with the loss of 425 men including George, HMS Limbourne was also torpedoed and was so badly damaged she was sunk later by the navy with the loss of 42 men, George has a headstone in the St Brieuc cemetery, France, special thanks to Shirley Pugh, George’s sister for the photos and Barry Hayes who’s father Joe took the photo of the headstone

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, who died on the 22nd September 1942, at Moray, Scotland. aged 31 years. The son of William and Emily Brown, husband of Phyllis Alberta Brown of 3 Belmont Avenue, Lowfields Estate, Teesville. Called To Higher Service, Remembered With Honour Eston Cemetery. P.79.
