Stoker 1st Class. Charles Ernest Turner (K/24157)
H.M.S. Black Prince, Royal Navy who died on the 31st May 1916 aged 19 years. Son of Thomas Herbert Turner and Elizabeth Ann Turner of 4 York Terrace, Normanby. Older brother William died less than a month later. Black Prince was sunk during the battle of Jutland, off the North Sea coast of Denmark, sinking within 15 minutes with no survivors from a crew of 857. Remembered With Honour Portsmouth Naval Memorial . 19 also commemorated on family memorial in Eston Cemetery. Gravestone – Q.306 and Normanby War Memorial

Captain John Searginson
Captain John Searginson. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 10 November 1916. Capt John Serginson Killed in action aged 26. He first served in the 4th Battalion as an other rank with Army number 2493 and under the name Searginson. He was the son of Charles John Serginson, a farmer and hay dealer and Mary Serginson of West Farm, Normanby, N Yorks. At the 1911 census he is recorded as a school teacher at West Dyke School, Redcar. He was an old boy of Middlesbrough High School and is commemorated on the school memorial plaque which is now displayed in Middlesbrough College. He was buried, but the area destroyed in subsequent shelling and he is commemorated on Special Memorial 9 in Warlencourt British Cemetery. Buried WARLENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY.

9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James Hermiston, of 22, Parrington St., Normanby, Eston, Yorks, and the late Mrs. Hermiston. Killed 5 July 1916. Aged 25. Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, Thiepval Memorial.

5th Bn,. Attd 13th Bn,. Yorkshire Regiment who was Killed In Action in France on the 12th July 1917 aged 23 years. Born 30th December 1893. The son of Hannah H. and the late John Wilkinson of 89 North View, California, Eston. John Wilkinson had been a Platelayer in Eston Mines, whilst Arthur had been a Pupil Teacher before his war service. Remembered With Honour Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home June 1917. Aged 32. Resided Eston. John William Buxton was a steel works labourer and attested on 31 August 1914. However, due to ill health (he had been in Hemlington Hospital from January 1915) he was discharged on 31 March 1915.
