About Eston Remembrance Committee

History

The Committee was founded in 2018 as a way of organising and providing an annual Remembrance Parade for the people of Eston. The Parade has grown in stature each year and takes place at the Eston War Memorial, located at Eston Square. Several of the Committee's members are current or former servicemen and women, with the rest being passionate volunteers from the Eston community.

Memorial Garden

As well as providing an annual Remembrance Parade, the Committee is also responsible for the maintenance of Eston Square's Memorial Garden that also pays respect to servicemen and women, as well as commemorating Eston's ironstone mining heritage. As well as ensuring the Garden is always impeccable and well maintained, the Committee also regularly enhances the Garden, such as adding a mural by our resident artist and ERC member Phil Meadows, as well as community art stones, planters, and other features.

Governance

The Committee is made up of 18 members with a Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary. The Committee hold monthly meetings to discuss and plan each year's Parade, but also plans for the Memorial Garden and other community projects. Anyone who wishes to join the Committee can request to do so via our Contact Us page.

Projects

While the annual Remembrance Parade and Memorial Garden take precedence, the Committee is nonetheless a non-profit organisation that seeks to support and elevate Eston as a community. This involves work with local schools and businesses, with projects ranging from art competitions to painting beautiful murals around the town. Our flagship project is Not Just A Name, which seeks to reveal the rich stories behind every name on the Eston War Memorial.

Funding

Eston Remembrance Committee is volunteer led and set up as a not-for-profit community organisation. We therefore rely on donations and funding grants. Where possible, we also seek to utilise any funding on the annual Remembrance Parade, but do look to invest in enhancing the Memorial Garden as well as our various community projects.
