Second Lieutenant Arthur Eric Townsend
Second Lieutenant Arthur Eric Townsend who served with both the 1/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) during the First World War. Regiments: 1/5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry; Royal Flying Corps. Died: 15 February 1917. Memorial/Burial: He is buried in the Crucifix Corner Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Personal Details: He was the son of Dr. Francis Edward Townsend and Annette Theresa Townsend of "Killora," Normanby, Eston, Yorkshire.

Lieutenant Francis Edward Stevenson “Joe” Townsend
n Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of Lieutenant Francis Edward Stevenson “Joe” Townsend serving with the 1/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 30/09/1916. The eldest son of Dr. and Mrs. Townsend, of Killora, Normanby, Eston, Yorks. Francis took part in the battles of Ypres, Hooge and Hill 60. He then took part in the Battle of Morval, [one of the battles of the Somme] and was wounded on the 16th September 1916, hit by shrapnel in his head.
