514 Sqdn.. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on the 13th June 1944 during Air Operations, aged 20 years. Son of Henry Alfred and Annie Maria Savage, 17 Cromwell Road, South Bank. No. 514 Squadron was part of RAF Bomber Command and was stationed at RAF Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire. It flew Avro Lancaster Mark II heavy bombers. On the night of 12/13 June 1944, Flight Sergeant Savage was an air gunner in the crew of Lancaster code-sign JI-L2 which took off to take part in a raid over Gelsenkirchen in Germany. But the aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter and crashed near the village of Zuid-Loo in Overijssel, Holland. Three members of the crew were able to bail out and subsequently evade capture, but the remaining five member were killed. George was born in 1924, and won a North Riding County Council Scholarship to attend Coatham School Redcar as a day boy in September 1935. He was then aged eleven and joined Cochrane's House, in Form IIA. Till The Dawn Breaks And The Shadows Flee Away Remembered With Honour Bathmen General Cemetery, Overijssel, Netherlands. 7th Bn,. Seaforth Highlanders who died on the 1st August 1944 aged 25 years. The son of Tom and Mary Elizabeth Spencer of 52 Church Lane, Eston. Master, Speak; Thy Servant Heareth Let Me Not Unheard Depart. Remembered With Honour Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery.
