Squadron Leader, Robin Henry Palmer (101485)
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on the 25th May 1946. aged 30 years The son of Harry Palmer of Eston House, the mine agent for Eston Mines and Jane Widowfield Palmer. Robin Henry was a Solicitor before enlisting in September 1940. Sqn/Ldr Robin Henry Palmer was flying Armed Forces Experimental Establishment Seafire III NN313 at an 'at home' air display at RAF Beaulieu located in the New Forest, Hampshire. With the weather deteriorating, the Seafire spun in off a low level roll. It crashed into the ground. The Seafire was destroyed and Palmer was killed instantly. H.M.S Easton, Royal Navy, who died on the 27th January 1944, aged 20 years at Mearnskirk Hospital in Glasgow. The son of Frank Patchett of 4 St Andrew's Road, Grangetown and the late Irene Patchett (nee Brocksom) Remembered With Honour Eston Cemetery, P.84

35 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on the 2nd February 1944 at Addenbrooke Hospital, Cambridge, aged 27 years. The son of John Robert and Susan Pegg of South Bank. Gunner William(Bill) Plews
Gunner William(Bill) Plews. Born at 22 Bottomley.s Row Eston, January 25th, 1920. The son of John and Rachel Plews. 3252569, 1/1 Maritime Regiment of Royal Artillery. Bill was one of 3 gunners killed on October 22nd, 1941 aged 21 years. He was aboard fuel tanker ship R.F.A. Darkdale which was anchored in James Bay, St Helena, a small Atlantic island. It was torpedoed by German U Boat U-68 in the early hours. Minutes earlier Bill had relieved Gunner Cyril Kasper who was one of two survivors pulled from the sea. In total 41 crew were killed instantly, two were saved and 7 crew were ashore. 1/1 Maritime Regt., Royal Artillery who died on the 22nd October 1941 aged 21 years. Born in Eston on the 25th January 1920, the son of John and Rachel Ann Plews, 22 Bottomley Row, Eston. Before his war service William was working as a Butcher's Apprentice. He was a DEMS gunner and his ship RFA. Darkdale, a Fleet oiler was sunk at 1.45 am on 22nd October 1941 by U-boat U-68 captained by Karl-Friedrich Merten. The vessel was anchored as a storage ship in Jamestown harbour, St. Helena. The tanker caught fire after being hit by a torpedo, exploded and sank. 38 crew members and three gunners were lost. The master, five crew members and three gunners survived the sinking, but only two of the men had actually been aboard when the ship was hit and were rescued by harbour craft after jumping overboard. (41 died and 9 survived). Remembered With Honour Portsmouth Naval Memorial . Panel 61, Column 2. also commemorated on family memorial in Eston Cemetery. Gravestone – K.440
